The bigger our Live For Today group gets, the more we realize that our members and survivors are adrenaline junkies who love to eat! Anytime we ask them what kind of events they would like to do next, the response always seems to be something action packed, adventurous and involving food. We love the enthusiasm and thought, what better way to celebrate Halloween this month than with pizza and a scary ghost tour in America’s oldest city?
The group met up this month at the Mellow Mushroom in St. Augustine and chowed down on shared appetizers and a variety of pizza’s (including a vegan friendly option for our favorite vegan member, Jolie). It finally felt like the first official fall night so we enjoyed our big outside table and caught up with everyone about what’s been going on since our last event. A quick icebreaker to introduce some of the new members to the group lead us to finding out that Kaitlyn, one of Live For Today’s co-founders, can open a banana with her toes…random, but definitely a fun fact!
One of our new members, Kara, joined us for the first time this month and was shocked to realize that she had known one of our other members, Alex, back when they were much younger and being treated for the same rare type of cancer at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital. The two hadn’t seen each other in over a decade and had a great time reconnecting as we finished up dinner.
Mellow Mushroom took care of our group’s love of food, so next up was the action! We headed over to Old St. Augustine for a frightfully fun Ghosts & Gravestones Tour. Our “ghost host” was awesome and super accommodating for our group (wheelchairs and all).
First stop was Lighthouse Park, one of the most haunted site in the southeast. Everyone snapped pictures trying to catch an “orb” or some “energy” in the photo and we actually got a few creepy ones out of the bunch. Then it was back on the bus and over to the old jail. We walked through it in the dark and learned some freaky stories that had some of our members adrenaline pumping.
Afterwards, everyone commenting on how fast the tour flew by (it was an hour and a half), and how much fun it was! The night was supposed to end there but did we mention we all love food? Last stop for the night was an impromptu dairy queen run to cap off the evening. October perfection. Happy Halloween everyone!
